Purchased from an out-of-state dealer:

You need to submit the following documents obtained from the dealer:

Complete a Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application and submit it (together with the above documentation and the appropriate fees) to the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles.  Specific information about fees and supporting documents can be found in the Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application instructions.

Purchased in a private sale:

You need to submit the following documents obtained from the person you purchased the vehicle from (the previous owner):

  • properly assigned title (Proper assignment requires all the owners listed on the title to sign as sellers in the assignment of ownership section on the back of the title and the new owner’s name must be entered on the “transferred to” line. Any liens listed on the title must be released.)
  • (if the title isn't a Vermont title) you will be required to get a VIN Verification
  • Bill of Sale & Odometer Disclosure Statement

Complete a Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application and submit it (together with the above documentation and the appropriate fees) to the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. Specific information about fees and supporting documents can be found in the Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application instructions.

Purchased outside of the United States:

New Vehicle (never registered)

You need to submit the following documents obtained from the dealer:

  • MCO (Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin) with the legend that it meets the 50-states or CA emissions
  • Bill of Sale & Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • Note: no credit for taxes paid to other countries (only U.S. states and Canadian Jurisdictions)

Complete a Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application and submit it (together with the above documentation and the appropriate fees) to the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. Specific information about fees and supporting documents can be found in the Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application instructions.

You need to submit the following documents obtained from the dealer:

  • the ownership document issued by the jurisdiction where the vehicle was registered
  • import paperwork (certifying that it meets the emission requirements for the US)
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • Note: no credit for taxes paid to other countries (only U.S. states and Canadian Jurisdictions)

Complete a Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application and submit it (together with the above documentation and the appropriate fees) to the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. Specific information about fees and supporting documents can be found in the Vermont Registration, Tax, and Title application instructions.
