Selling a vehicle to another individual:

The seller needs to provide the buyer with the following documents:

  • properly assigned title
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • Bill of Sale

The seller needs to keep:

  • the registration certificate
  • plates
  • a copy of the Bill of Sale

Selling a vehicle to a Vermont dealer:

The dealer will tell the seller what they require.  The seller should keep the registration certificate and plates (unless they are buying a new car from the dealer and are going to transfer the plates).

Giving a vehicle to an individual (gift - no exchange of money or bartering):

The seller needs to provide the new owner with:

  • properly assigned title
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (PDF document 245.65KB)
  • a Gift Tax Exemption form (PDF document 273.2KB)

The seller needs to keep:

  • registration certificate
  • plates
  • a copy of the Gift Tax Exemption form
