Any Vermont resident registering a vehicle in Vermont may complete an application for a low number plate. The Department of Motor Vehicles issues registration numbers 1001 through 9999 (known as "low" registration numbers) for pleasure cars or trucks (weighing up to 6099 lbs. that are registered at the "pleasure car" rate) in the following manner:

A person holding a registration number between 1001 and 9999 may retain the number for the ensuing registration period, provided the renewal application is made prior to or within 60 days of the expiration of the registration.

If the registrant does not wish to renew the registration, a member of the immediate family may apply for the low number plates within the 60 day period after the plate expiration date.

There is no additional annual fee for the low registration number plates.

The Department restricts the issuance of these registrations to residents of Vermont and may also restrict issuance to applicants who do not already have such a registration issued to them. Your name may appear on a maximum of three (3) low number registrations.
