Making Your License/Permit Exam Appointment
We recommend that you contact the Department to schedule an appointment for tests. An appointment is required for CDL tests. You may schedule an appointment by doing the following:
- Calling Central Scheduling at 1-802-828-2085, or
- Send the following information in an email and you will receive an email back providing you with the date, time and location of your test:
- Complete name
- Date of birth
- Vermont DMV PID (Personal Identification) or Permit ID number (if one is available, or if you have one)
- Telephone number
- Type of test (please specify written test, eye test or road test)
- Area/location where you wish to take the test
- Approximate dates and times you wish to take the test
NOTE: If you call Central Scheduling don't send an email ---never do both.
Having an appointment means that you will be taken care of as quickly as possible.
If you appear at the Motor Vehicle office without an appointment, you may be processed as a "walk-in", however, if you are taking a CDL test you cannot "walk in" ---you must have an appointment. All persons with appointments will be taken care of first. If there is still enough time to give you the test, then you will be tested. If there is not enough time to test you, you should schedule an appointment for a later date. Remember, as a "walk-in" you may not receive the service you seek.
If you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment, please notify Central Scheduling at 1-802-828-2085 as soon as possible so that we may make the scheduled time available for someone else.
Obtain details concerning the documents that you will need to have with you (and other general information that will be of help to you) when you appear for your test:
- Two forms of identification
- Proof of residency
- Commercial Driver License (details)
- Convert License From Another State (details)
- Junior Operator License (details)
- Learner Permit (details)
- Operator License (details)
Please remember that you are required to provide two forms of identification in order to complete any type of driver license/permit transaction and proof of residency is required.
General Information About Driver Training
Driving schools and instructors are licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The schools are privately owned businesses which operate under guidelines and standards set forth in state statutes and rules. There are two basic types of instruction, which are listed below.
Commercial vehicle training, which provides instruction in the operation of commercial vehicles. More information ....
Standard driver training schools provide instruction in the operation of "pleasure cars". These training programs provide the following services:
- A state-approved driver education course which is required for license applicants under the age of 18. This course consists of a minimum of 30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind-the-wheel instruction and 6 hours observation. Students who successfully complete the course are issued a "Driver Education Certificate".
- Adult driver training and refresher training. This type of training may consist of classroom and/or behind-the-wheel instruction. A combination of both types of instruction is available for novice drivers in a state-approved "6+6 Adult Driver Education Course". This program consists of a minimum of 6 hours classroom and 6 hours behind-the-wheel instruction.
- Driver license testing. Instructors at participating schools are certified to administer the DMV driver license road test. This service may be provided to students who have completed an approved driver education course. Adult drivers who have completed an approved ("6+6") adult driver course may also be eligible to be tested.
