Death of Owner

Requirements to Re-title/Register a Vehicle upon Death of Owner

Required Documents

The following documents are required to sell or assign the vehicle based upon the Rights of Survivorship (please note "Exceptions" below):

Vehicle is jointly titled to Tenants By The Entirety (spouses):

  • A copy of the Death Certificate identifying the surviving spouse.

Vehicle  is jointly titled and title states ownership to be Joint Tenants or Partners:

Lost/Replacement Registration

Online

Ordering a replacement (duplicate) registration online is fast, easy, and secure. You can obtain replacement registrations for most types of vehicles including car, truck, trailer, motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV, and more. Upon completion, you will receive a temporary registration that is valid for 10 days. A permanent registration and sticker will be mailed to you.

You are eligible to order a replacement registration online if your existing registration is valid and not expiring within 60 days.

Transfer Ownership

To transfer your Vermont registration from one vehicle (car, motorhome, jitney, motorbus, motorcycle, trailer, or truck) to another you must do the following:

Renewing online is fast, easy, and secure. You can renew most types of vehicles including car, truck, trailer, motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV, and more. Upon completion, you will receive a temporary registration that is valid for 10 days. A permanent registration and sticker will be mailed to you.

New Registration

Purchased from a Vermont dealer

As a rule, the dealer takes care of all of the requirements.

 

Purchased from an out-of-state dealer

You need to submit the following documents obtained from the dealer:

Cancellation of Registration

To cancel a registration, please provide ALL of the following materials:

  • Return the registration certificate with the "transfer of ownership" section completed

  • Include a  letter explaining why you want to cancel the registration.

You may be eligible for a full or partial refund of the registration fee. More info...

Registration/Tax/Title Application

01 August 2016
To apply for registration and titling (when applicable). Used for new transactions, transfers, renewals, title-only transactions, adding or deleting an owner, lease buyouts, and IRP transactions.

Town Clerks

Participating Vermont Town Clerks can renew select motor vehicle registrations.
