Motor Vehicle Inspectors 100th Anniversary
On June 16, 1919, Ara A. Griggs of Newport Vermont began his duties as Vermont’s first Motor Vehicle Inspector. The Secretary of State’s office was the lead agency for motor vehicle registration and licensing until the formation of the Department of Motor Vehicles in 1927. Inspector Griggs had been a Deputy Sheriff with the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, and he then served for 27 years as Motor Vehicle Inspector, Deputy Commissioner, and Chief Inspector until his death in 1946. During his tenure, he saw the Department grow from one Inspector to 37 in 1946.
