The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Inspector is a full-time law enforcement position within the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) primarily responsible for enforcing state size and weight statutes and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations; the DMV is designated by Governor Phil Scott as the lead Agency responsible for Vermont's Size and Weight Plan and Vermont's Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. This position has extensive interaction with other federal and state agencies, law enforcement agencies, industry groups, as well as DMV Permit Unit and Commercial Vehicle Operations. The ideal candidate must be motivated, with excellent time management skills, and the ability to work and make decisions independently. This position primarily works in an outdoor setting during all weather conditions. Daily activities and assignments are generally scheduled two weeks in advance but are subject to the department's needs and current mission. Typical assignments are comprised of motor vehicle patrol focusing on all aspects of highway safety and infrastructure protection, fixed-site truck inspection details, and a variety of other assigned tasks that support the mission of the department. This position is assigned a take-home enforcement vehicle and receives storage allowance in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Candidate must reside, or be willing to move to, one of the following counties in Vermont: Orleans, Essex, Lamoille, Caledonia, or Washington. The position does require some travel for training and mission-oriented activities. The successful applicant is subject to a criminal history record check, motor vehicle history record check, background investigation, and polygraph test.
