Artisan's Liens

Any person/company who repairs a motor vehicle at the request of the owner holds a lien for their reasonable charges and may retain possession of the vehicle until charges are paid. This is known as an artisan’s lien.

Obtaining Legal Ownership

In order for the repair person/company to apply for an artisan’s lien they must maintain possession of the vehicle. If the vehicle is no longer in their possession, they do not qualify for an artisan’s lien.

Exempt Title

A Vermont resident may apply at any time to the Commissioner to obtain an “exempt vehicle title” for a vehicle that is more than 25 years old.

Issuance of Exempt Vehicle Title upon Request

DMV will issue an exempt vehicle title if the following criteria are met:

Tax Exemption - Gift

To request exemption of tax based upon gift when a vehicle was previously registered and/or titled by the donor and is gifted (with no money exchange and no current lienholder to be listed) to a family member as defined acceptable by this form.

Replacement Title Application

22 September 2016
To apply for a replacement Vermont title when the original title has been lost, stolen, destroyed, or is illegible.

Personal Delivery of Title

22 September 2016
To request the title in person (only the Montpelier branch can print titles). All owner(s) listed on previous title must sign this request.

Lien Add

22 September 2016
To add or adjust a lien to an existing Vermont title.

Authorization for Pay Off

22 September 2016
To allow for payoff for Vermont insurance company and auto dealer to submit to lienholders to have lien released and title sent to them rather than the original owner when the vehicle is being traded in.
