Driver's License, Renewal

If you have a Driving Privilege Card (DPC) and wish to upgrade to a Real ID Compliant Driver’s License or Non-Enhanced Driver's License and want to upgrade to an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), you must renew in person, and you will need documentation to establish identity.

A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) must be renewed in person.

Renewing online is fast, easy, and secure. Upon completion, you will receive a temporary license. The permanent license will be mailed to you. You can renew online if your photo remains valid throughout the renewal period (2 or 4 years), as photos are valid for up to nine years.

You can renew by mail if your photo remains valid throughout the renewal period (2 or 4 years), as photos are valid for up to nine years.

What you'll need to renew by mail:

  • Renewal notice (or completed form VL-021)
  • Mail renewal notice and payment to Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles, 120 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05603-0001

Please note that office hours, services, and accepted payment methods differ by location.

  • Renewal notice (or completed form VL-021)
  • Current license or another form of identification
  • Payment

Note: additional documentation will be required if your name has changed or you have a Real ID card marked "Limited Term."
