International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)

The International Fuel Tax Agreement is an agreement among jurisdictions in the United States and Canada that simplifies fuel tax reporting for Interjurisdictional Carriers with vehicle fleets fueled by diesel fuel, gasoline, gasohol, propane and natural gas.

To license under IFTA in Vermont a carrier must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Your qualified motor vehicle(s) are registered in Vermont (see definition of "Qualified Motor Vehicles" below).
  • You have an established place of business in Vermont from which you maintain operational control of your vehicle fleet.
  • You maintain records of your qualified motor vehicles in Vermont or will make your records available to officials or agents of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles for audit purposes.
  • Your qualified motor vehicle(s) travel in Vermont and at least one other IFTA member jurisdiction.

Qualified Motor Vehicles

"Qualified Motor Vehicle" means a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for transportation of persons or property and:

  1. Having two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross weight exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or
  2. Power unit having three or more axles regardless of weight; or
  3. Is used in combination, when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight.

"Qualified Motor Vehicle" does not include recreational vehicles.
