You must return the number plates, if any, or the original registration certificate.
You may be eligible for a full or partial refund of the registration fee under the following conditions:
If you cancel before the beginning of the registration period.
If you cancel within 30 days of the date of issue and the registration stickers have not been affixed to the plates.
If you cancel before the beginning of the second year of the registration period for a two—or five-year registration, you may receive a refund of the second year’s registration fee.
If you provide proof that the vehicle has been totally destroyed by fire or, through crash or wear, has become wholly unfit for use and has been dismantled.
You may also apply for a refund if the registration was done in error. For example, you thought you were renewing the registration for a different vehicle.
Please note a $5.00 administrative fee may apply.
To be considered for a registration refund, you must return your registration certificate to the DMV. Without this certificate, you may return your plate(s) and request a refund.
